What differs by operating system
Windows
The default target. Nearly every vendor ships a mature Windows agent, features land here first, and Active Directory or Intune deployment is well-trodden. If your fleet is Windows-only, platform coverage simply won't be your deciding factor — focus on privacy posture and pricing instead.
macOS
Well supported, with a real caveat: Apple's security model requires explicit user consent for Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions, and those can be revoked at any time. Practically this means agents can silently stop collecting after an OS upgrade or a permission reset. Ask any vendor how they detect and report permission loss, and whether MDM (Jamf, Kandji, Intune) can pre-approve the agent — otherwise you'll discover gaps in your data long after they open.
Apple Silicon is now universal, so also confirm the agent runs natively rather than under Rosetta, which affects battery and CPU on laptops.
Linux
The genuine gap. Most productivity-monitoring vendors skip it, because the desktop Linux market is small outside engineering — which is precisely the population many teams most want to understand. Where Linux support exists, verify three things:
- Distribution coverage — Ubuntu/Debian is common; RHEL, Fedora and Arch far less so.
- Display server — X11 is broadly supported; Wayland is now the default on modern Ubuntu, Fedora and GNOME, and it deliberately restricts what applications can observe about other windows. An agent written for X11 may collect far less under Wayland.
- Packaging and updates — a real

When a vendor builds three separate agents, the collectors usually differ — one platform reports idle time differently, another categorises browser activity another way, a third misses certain window events. You then compare a Mac designer against a Linux engineer using numbers that aren't measuring quite the same thing, and quietly draw wrong conclusions.

- Get the OS matrix in writing, feature by feature — not "supported" but which specific capabilities work on each.

- Check the data after a week. Compare a Linux and a Windows user doing similar work; large unexplained gaps mean uneven collection.
- Test an OS upgrade. macOS point releases are the classic moment agents silently break.
